Where Could You Go? Albany, Oregon

We place students in communities big and small throughout the U.S., mostly in places you’ve never heard of, but they all provide a unique American experience unlike any other!

However, we do have pockets of the country that are common spots for our students to spend their program. So we wanted to give you an inside scoop into communities many of our students have called “home” for years! Make sure to check out the other communities on our blog’s homepage.

Albany, Oregon

The Basics

Not to be confused with the capital of New York, this spectacular host community of 51,980 people is nestled between the Willamette River and Interstate 5 in the beautiful Pacific Northwest. Albany, Oregon is also just an hour from the coast, and the Cascade Mountain range lies to the east.

Agriculture and manufacturing are the big drivers of the local economy. The town calls itself the “rare metals capital of the world” due to the production of zirconium, hafnium, and titanium, and also the “grass seed capital of the world”.

You’ll enjoy the mild climate as well: average temperatures run from 47 degrees in December and January to 80 degrees in July and August. Just be sure to bring your umbrella: Albany averages over five inches of rain a month from November-February.

The Sights

One of the great things about our host communities (and lots of American cities/towns) are the little quirks that make them unique, and Albany is no different. Enter: The Waverly Lake duck. Since the 1980s, the duck welcomed folks to Albany, but fell into poor condition over the years and was removed in 2007.

After 10 years and months of fundraising, the duck is back and better than ever!

While you’re out trying to take a picture of a giant foam duck, be sure to check out one of Albany’s other 30 parks or eight trails, such as Talking Waters Gardens. Or, have you ever seen a covered bridge? There are plenty in the Albany area.

The Funs

A project that started in 2002 finally came to fruition in August 2017, as Albany held the grand opening for their historic and beautifully restored carousel and museum. Over 160,000 hours of carving, painting, and the like went into bringing this carousel back to life and help the plan to revitalize the downtown area.

Albany also has many of the typical American forms of amusement, from bowling allies to movie theaters. This community also hosts many events and festivals throughout the year, so ask your Host Family their favorites!

The Foods

Many places in this part of the country offer diners a wide range of fresh food, with everything from traditional American BBQ to locally sourced, vegan options. You won’t have trouble finding food in Albany.

Novak’s Hungarian Restaurant consistently ranks at the top of several lists. While a little pricey, there a lots of European classics on their menu and it’s a town favorite.

Looking for that locally sourced magic? Sybaris Bistro is an upscale option whose menu changes monthly.

Some good ole’ BBQ? The Oregon Barbecue Company will fill all your rib and brisket needs.
