1965- Harry Potter creator and author JK Rowling is born in Yate, England


August 1


1914- World War I erupts in Europe



1961- First Six Flags opens in Texas, featuring the world’s first log flume ride, mine cart ride, and 360-degree loop


August 2


1876- Legend of the American west, Wild Bill Hickok is murdered in Deadwood, South Dakota by Jack McCall at the No. 10 Saloon.



August 3


1492- Columbus sets sail





1949- The National Basketball Association is created

August 4


1944- Anne Frank Captured
